30 Daily Writing Prompts for November Inspired by Scotland’s Myths and Legends
If you’ve been here for a while, you know I love a good story - and November’s writing prompts might be my favourite yet.
This month is themed “The Bonny Banks and Beyond,” and it's a full collection of 30 daily prompts inspired by the rich history, eerie folklore, and haunting landscapes of Scotland. Think haunted vaults, selkie legends, cursed tartan, ancient standing stones and a whole lot more.
Why Scotland? Well, I live in rural Scotland right now, and it’s genuinely one of the most beautiful, atmospheric places I’ve ever known. There’s so much here that feels like a story already waiting to be told. From mist-covered hills to blood-soaked legends and ruined castles with too many windows… I knew it would be the perfect setting to carry us through November.
From the Vaults to the Firth of Forth
This month, I don’t have one single favourite prompt, but what I do love is the variety. We go everywhere, from The Little Drummer Boy in the Vaults to The Bridge That Never Sleeps, from Sawney Bean’s Cave to a quiet loch beneath the stars. There are selkies and glaistigs, cursed tartan and glowing cairns. There’s romance, horror, magical realism, historical fiction, and more. Some prompts feel like myths. Others feel like memories.
What You Can Expect
Every daily prompt includes:
◆ A title
◆ A stunning, high-quality image
◆ An opening line
◆ A closing line
◆ A plot idea
You can use one element or all five, they work either way. They’re perfect for creative writing lessons, warm-ups, assessments, homework, exam practice, cover work, or just something different when your class needs it.
And yes, they’re designed for all students. Whether someone leans toward fantasy, mystery, or character-driven fiction, there’s something here that will catch their imagination.
New to Daily Prompts?
Give them a try! I have a completely free week of prompts on TpT here so you can try them out with no risk. Just grab them and see how your students respond.
Spoiler: They will respond.
