Daily Writing Prompts to Spark Creativity This August (+ Free Month of Prompts!)
I always say that inspiration is everywhere—but August is when I really feel it in the air.
With daily writing prompts launching soon, I am excited to announce that our first theme is Threads of Summer, and it launches August 1st. The idea came to me while thinking about how summer lingers. How it settles into our skin, our routines, our memories. Even as the back-to-school buzz starts creeping in, there’s something about those last golden days that feel rich with storytelling potential.
And I don’t know about you, but when I think about summer, I don’t just remember the sunny bits. I remember the quiet ones. The weird ones. The ones I didn’t realise were important until much later. That’s what I wanted to build into these prompts. Not just sunshine and smiles—but longing, nostalgia, magic, memory, even regret.
Why “Threads of Summer”?
Because it captures that feeling of holding onto something, even as it starts to slip away. That bittersweet blur of long days, tangled friendships, endings and beginnings.
And more practically? It gives students something to pull from. If they’re writing in August, chances are they’ve just lived through a whole summer of moments—whether that’s holidays, heartbreaks, or just scrolling on TikTok and sipping iced lattes. That’s gold dust for writers. Even if the piece ends up being magical realism, dystopia, or horror, those emotional touchpoints still help shape it.
Who are The August Prompts For?
While I originally designed the daily prompts with secondary English teachers in mind, they’re not limited to the classroom. They work brilliantly for homeschooling families, tutors, creative writing groups, and even individual teen writers who just want something to spark their imagination. I’ve kept the tone and content age-appropriate for students aged 11 and up - nothing too childish, and plenty of depth to stretch creative muscles.
What I love about these prompts is how flexible they are. You can use them as daily warm-ups, homework tasks, exam prep, or simply as a low-stakes way to build writing confidence. Some teachers have used them for full short story writing lessons, and others have set them as journal starters. There’s no one way to use them; just whatever works for you and your students.
How Do The Prompts Work?
Each prompt includes five parts to help students get started (and keep going):
◆ A title
◆ A thought-provoking image
◆ An opening line
◆ A closing line
◆ A plot idea
Students can use just one to spark an idea - or combine all five if they need a bit of extra support. Some days, they might feel inspired by the image alone. Other days, the plot idea might be the key that unlocks something surprising. It’s flexible by design, and there’s no “wrong” way to use them.
