Meaning: A diminutive of Philip, meaning lover of horses

Prince Pip is tiny, energetic and the youngest member of a royal family filled with impressive warriors. Nobody takes his ambitions particularly seriously, especially when his preferred weapon is a wooden sword and his closest companion is a stubborn palace pony.

Story Ideas:

• Pip's pony carries him through a gap in an enchanted hedge too small for his brothers' magnificent horses.

• The little prince enters a giant's castle because he is the only member of his family small enough to fit through the keyhole.

Meaning: Traditionally associated with benevolence or the name Elijah

88. Felix

Meaning: Happy, fortunate or lucky

Prince Felix is the apparently foolish youngest son who succeeds largely because impossible things have a habit of working in his favour. His brothers consider him unserious and embarrassingly trusting, but Felix has never understood why being clever should require expecting the worst from everyone.

Story Ideas:

• Felix trades his expensive horse for a talking goose, much to his brothers' horror, and discovers the goose knows the route to the hidden kingdom they are seeking.

• Samuel discovers a crown hidden inside the flour barrel after soldiers arrive searching the village.

He is dreamy, impractical and much more interested in butterflies than battles, leading everyone to assume his formidable older sister will handle anything important.

Story Ideas:

• August follows an unusual butterfly away from a royal hunt and discovers a sleeping kingdom hidden behind a waterfall.

• The prince is sent to negotiate with a giant because everyone else capable of fighting it has already failed.

• August inherits the throne unexpectedly and discovers that the ancient crown refuses to remain on the head of anyone who actually wants to be king.

10. Cursed & Tragic Prince Names

Some of the most memorable fairytale princes are the ones trapped inside stories they desperately want to escape. These cursed prince names suit transformed heirs, sleeping royals, lonely monsters and young men paying for bargains made by their families long before they were born. Their happily ever after may require true love — but it might just as easily demand courage, sacrifice, forgiveness or finally breaking one of the rules fairytales usually expect them to follow.

91. Tristan

Meaning: Traditionally associated with tumult or sorrow through literary tradition

Prince Tristan is romantic, loyal and destined for a love story everyone around him believes can only end badly. He understands duty perfectly well, but the person he loves and the future expected of him seem determined to pull his life in opposite directions.

Story Ideas:

• Tristan is betrothed to one princess but repeatedly dreams of another woman imprisoned somewhere beyond the mountains.

• The prince drinks an enchanted potion intended for his brother and falls hopelessly in love with the one person he must never marry.

• Orson shelters an injured traveller in his forest den without revealing that he can understand every word she says.

Prince Lucius is gentle, beautiful and cursed to disappear whenever daylight touches him. He lives in shuttered rooms and moonlit gardens, known to most of the kingdom only through rumours about the prince nobody ever sees.

• Lucius falls in love with a gardener who works only during daylight and communicates with her through letters hidden among the flowers.

• The prince accidentally remains outside until sunrise and discovers that daylight transports him somewhere rather than destroying him.

96. Emeric

Meaning: Powerful ruler

Prince Emeric was born destined to become a great king, but a prophecy claims his coronation will destroy the kingdom. His family has spent years simultaneously preparing him for the throne and desperately ensuring he never actually reaches it.

• Emeric's father refuses to name him heir, causing the prince to investigate the prophecy for himself.

Meaning: Lion man

Prince Leander is brave, proud and cursed to transform into a lion whenever he experiences fear. Determined never to reveal weakness, he becomes increasingly reckless in an attempt to prevent anyone discovering the truth.

Story Ideas:

• Leander transforms during his own wedding ceremony when he realises the bride has vanished.

• The prince enters a supposedly haunted castle and spends the entire adventure pretending the enormous lion accompanying his companions is unrelated to him.

• Leander discovers that admitting he is frightened prevents the transformation for the first time.

Meaning: Of the forest

Prince Silvan vanished into an enchanted forest as a child and returned years later without having aged a day. He remembers almost nothing about where he has been, but flowers grow from his footprints and something in the woods keeps calling him back.

• Silvan hears music from the forest every night and begins remembering a second royal family waiting for him there.

• The prince discovers that twenty years passed outside the forest while he experienced only a single afternoon.

• Silvan's younger sister, now older than he is, follows him into the woods when she realises he is disappearing again.

100. Casimir

Meaning: Traditionally interpreted as proclaiming or destroying peace

Prince Casimir is dutiful, serious and heir to a curse carried by every firstborn prince in his family. Each heir is granted the kingdom but loses the thing he loves most on the day he becomes king, turning Casimir's approaching coronation into something he increasingly dreads.

Story Ideas:

• Casimir refuses the throne to protect the woman he loves, only for the crown to begin following him wherever he goes.

• The prince discovers that every previous king deliberately misunderstood what the curse meant by "lose".

• Casimir attempts to ensure he loves nothing before his coronation and accidentally becomes attached to an orphaned child he rescues along the road.

Go Deeper Into Creating Fairytale Princes

Once you have chosen a name, start thinking about the prince beyond the title. Fairytale princes are often caught between who they were born to become and the adventure that changes them. Give your prince expectations to escape, impossible tasks to complete, relationships that complicate his future and a kingdom that may not be waiting quite as patiently as he expects.

◆ Decide His Place in the Royal Family – Is he the beloved heir, the overlooked second son, the youngest of seven brothers or a prince nobody knows exists? Birth order can completely change his opportunities, responsibilities and relationship with the throne.

◆ Decide Whether He Actually Wants the Crown – Becoming king might be his greatest ambition or his worst nightmare. Perhaps he desperately wants to prove himself worthy, would happily surrender the throne to a sibling or knows something terrible happens to every prince who inherits it.

◆ Give Him a Fairytale Quest – Send him beyond the safety of the palace. He might need to retrieve a golden bird, find an impossible castle, rescue a missing sibling, break an enchantment, answer three riddles or return with something nobody believes exists.

◆ Make the Quest Personal – The strongest adventure should test more than his ability to wield a sword. A proud prince might have to ask for help, a selfish prince might need to sacrifice something precious and a sheltered prince might finally encounter the consequences of his family's rule.

◆ Think About What He Has Been Taught – Princes grow up surrounded by expectations. Perhaps he has been trained to fight, negotiate, dance, hunt and eventually rule but cannot cook a meal, mend his clothes or recognise when somebody is lying to him.

◆ Give Him Brothers and Sisters – Royal siblings create instant fairytale possibilities. They can become rivals, allies, missing heirs, jealous older brothers, protective sisters or fellow adventurers. Three royal siblings sent on the same impossible quest can each approach it completely differently.

◆ Let Him Be the Foolish Prince – Not every prince needs to be clever or heroic. A vain, spoiled, gullible or spectacularly sheltered prince can be enormous fun to write, particularly when the story forces him to survive without servants, wealth or the automatic respect of everyone around him.

◆ Give Him Someone Unexpected to Help – Fairytale success often depends upon how characters treat those who appear unimportant. A prince who shares his food with an old woman, frees a trapped fox or helps a stranger beside the road might discover that kindness becomes far more useful than his royal title.

◆ Consider His Relationship With Romance – Your prince might be searching for true love, avoiding an arranged marriage, competing for someone's hand or already in love with somebody considered completely unsuitable. He might even be the prince everyone expects the heroine to marry when she has absolutely no intention of doing so.

◆ Play With the Prince Charming Archetype – Decide what "charming" actually means in your story. Your prince could genuinely be kind and romantic, perform perfection because the court expects it or look exactly like the traditional hero while behaving more like the villain.

◆ Give Him a Magical Companion – Talking horses, enchanted foxes, ravens, frogs, bears, wolves and tiny magical creatures can become guides, friends or reluctant partners. Perhaps the prince dismisses their advice at first and learns rather quickly that this was a mistake.

◆ Curse Him – Princes are excellent targets for transformations and enchantments. Turn him into a beast, bird, frog, bear or statue; trap him inside a mirror; make him sleep for a hundred years; steal his shadow; or allow him to become human for only one hour each night.

◆ Give Him an Impossible Rule – Perhaps he must never reveal his name, remove an enchanted necklace, enter the northern forest or ask his mysterious bride where she goes after midnight. The more inconvenient the rule becomes, the more tempting it should be to break.

◆ Take Away His Royal Privilege – Remove the castle, servants, money and recognisable clothing and see who remains. A prince travelling anonymously can discover what ordinary people really think of his family — and whether anyone still values him when his title means nothing.

◆ Create a Rival Prince – Another royal heir can mirror everything your character believes about himself. The rival might be stronger, richer, more charming or apparently more heroic, but perhaps the competition eventually reveals that neither prince understands the real challenge.

◆ Give Him a Secret – Perhaps he is not the king's biological son, possesses forbidden magic, secretly visits the village in disguise or knows that his older brother should never inherit the throne. A prince surrounded by court gossip has plenty of reasons to conceal the truth.

◆ Make His Parents Part of the Problem – Kings and queens can arrange marriages, forbid adventures, favour one sibling, conceal prophecies or desperately attempt to prevent the curse placed upon their son at birth. Sometimes escaping the monster is considerably easier than escaping the royal family's plans.

◆ Decide What Kind of Prince He Will Become – The person who leaves the palace should not necessarily be the person who returns. Let the journey make him wiser, stranger, kinder, more dangerous or considerably less interested in becoming king.

◆ Ask What Happens After Happily Ever After – Rescuing someone, breaking a curse or falling in love does not automatically solve everything. Your prince may still need to return home, confront his family, repair the damage caused during his adventure and decide whether the throne waiting for him is truly the ending he wants.

Final Thoughts

The right fairytale prince name can immediately begin shaping the character behind it. Edward might suggest a traditional heir raised for the throne, Rowan feels at home beneath the branches of an enchanted forest, Caspian belongs beside wild seas and distant islands, while Tristan seems destined for a story touched by romance and tragedy.

But being born a prince does not determine what kind of fairytale he will have.

He might begin his story inside a magnificent palace with absolutely no desire to leave it. He could be the youngest of seven brothers, the overlooked second son, the celebrated heir everyone expects to become a hero or the foolish prince nobody trusts with anything important. He might ride willingly towards adventure — or find himself dragged into one because somebody turned his brothers into swans.

Give him something that his title cannot provide.

A prince can own a hundred horses and still need the help of a talking fox. He can command servants but find himself alone in a forest where nobody knows his name. He can be promised a kingdom and discover that inheriting it requires sacrificing the life he actually wants. He can arrive expecting to rescue the princess and find that she escaped the tower three chapters ago.

Most importantly, allow your prince to change.

The spoiled prince might learn generosity. The cowardly prince might discover that courage does not mean being fearless. The perfect Prince Charming might realise he has spent his entire life performing somebody else's idea of happiness. And the forgotten youngest son might return from an impossible journey carrying the one thing his older brothers could never find.
